Smart furniture innovator secures third round of funding from GCBF to support international growth

Cheshire-based Frank Olsen Furniture has secured £80,000 from NPIF II – GC Business Finance and River Capital Smaller Loans, as part of the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund II (NPIF II), to fuel the next stage of its growth.

Founded by Charlie Graybrook in 2016, Frank Olsen combines traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge SMART technology to create stylish, app-integrated furniture for modern living. This latest investment marks the third round of funding provided by GC Business Finance (GCBF), having supported the business from its earliest stages.

Charlie first approached GCBF in 2017 for a Start Up Loan to fund initial stock – a move that enabled him to scale from crafting prototypes in his garden workshop to producing high-quality collections for major UK retailers.

Since then, the business has grown significantly, introducing multiple product lines and SMART features that enhance usability, including app-controlled lighting and device integration. A second round of funding from NPIF – River & GC Microfinance supported working capital needs as the business gained traction.

Now, with this new investment through NPIF II, Frank Olsen is expanding its reach into international markets. The business has recently secured distribution agreements in Canada and Australia, supporting its ambition to become a global brand.

Charlie Graybrook, Founder of Frank Olsen Furniture, said: What started as a simple idea has turned into a thriving business. GCBF has been with us every step of the way—from start up to international expansion. This latest funding will allow us to invest further in product development and reach new markets. We’re excited about what the future holds.”

Andy Nichols, Investment Manager at GC Business Finance, commented: It’s been a pleasure to support Charlie on his journey from day one. His commitment to innovation and growth is clear, and this funding marks a new chapter as Frank Olsen becomes a recognised name globally. We look forward to seeing where they go next.”

Sue Barnard, Senior Investment Manager at the British Business Bank, added: Frank Olsen Furniture is a great example of how British Business Bank-backed funding can support businesses at every stage. From a Start Up Loan to NPIF I and now NPIF II, this is exactly the kind of growth we aim to unlock across the North.”
